FAQs

Even if you have no pain or symptoms related to dental issues, it is still important to have regular checkups.  Dental professionals can diagnose dental issues in their early stages and early detection is key to keeping a healthy smile.

Your dentist will evaluate your overall oral health and conduct an oral cancer screening. Your medical history may be discussed if there is a connection to a concern.  Our dental assistant may use a special instrument that can determine whether you need to be treated for gum disease or not.

You, being a unique individual will have your own dental requirements. Some people need to come in more than a twice a year for treatment and others are just fine with seeing us every 6 months.  Each person’s treatment plan will very, and it depends on your specific dental needs.

In dental X-rays, there are very low levels of radiation, but dental X-rays tools are designed to limit the exposure of radiation to the body. The amount of radiation that a dental x-ray produces is about the same as you would receive from a cross country airplane ride. Radiation is measured in millirems and one dental x-ray has only .5 millirems.

At TruDentistry, we take every precaution to limit any exposure.  We are confident that the dental X-rays that we perform are very safe.

We get asked a lot about cavities and what they are.  A cavity is simply a small hole in the tooth that develops as a result of tooth decay. Tooth decay eats away at the tooth and can result in a cavity.  Cavities can come from poor eating habits and poor teeth cleaning habits. It’s important to get cavities repaired as soon as possible because they will continue to grow larger with time. The sooner you fill a cavity the less likely you are to experience root canals and tooth loss.

Patients ask us about whitening their teeth all the time. The fastest and most effective way to whiten teeth is typically an in-office professional whitening procedure. At TruDentistry of Tigard, our research brought us to the Zoom Teeth whitening System.  We have been using this system for several years and have upgraded our equipment over time.  We selected the Zoom system because it is highly effective and can whiten a smile up to six shades whiter, depending on the patient.

Cavities and gum disease are the most common problems. Both can be prevented with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.

We recommend a toothbrush change every 3 months or sooner if the bristles become worn and frayed. If you’ve been sick with a cold or other bacterial infection, it’s wise to replace your toothbrush once you’re better.

Oral cancer often starts as a tiny, unnoticed white or red spot in the mouth. It can affect any area around the mouth. Around 34,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year. Early detection is essential to effective treatment and regular checkups help with early detection.

It is important for us as dentists to see our patients at least every six months so that we can effectively spot dental problems early on when treatment is likely to be minimal and far less expensive. We can also prevent potential problems from developing in the first place when we can evaluate your oral health on a regular basis.
