Preventative Services

The healthiest teeth are the ones well taken care of before problems arise, and when problems are detected early.

Full exams for all ages

Adult Services:
In line with our philosophy of complete care of our patients we invite new patients to have a comprehensive exam in order to determine what services are right for you.  This includes necessary x-rays, a charting of all the teeth and their conditions, a periodontal (gum) screening, oral cancer screening, a check of the bite and oral habits. The doctor will then explain and discuss her findings and recommended any treatment necessary and any alternatives. Questions are encouraged.

Children’s Services:
It is very important to us that children get off to a great start with the health of their mouth. The American Dental Association is now recommending children be seen as soon as their first teeth come in. We offer a free “Happy Visit” that introduces the child to the dental office in a pleasant and non-threatening way.

We Are Using State Of The Art Scanner For The Comfort Of Our Patients

We are very excited to announce that we have a beautiful new scanner that will enable us to scan your teeth in 3D format with a pen like instrument. This is the state of the art in dentistry. When we preform cosmetic dentistry services or provide our patients with a night-guard, we must first take impressions of the teeth.  This requires the use of a material known as alginate which is an elastic, irreversible hydrocolloid impression substance. That is a fancy way of saying that we put a bunch of goop in your mouth for several minutes in order to get good impressions of you teeth.  We then send the physical impressions over to the dental lab where they mill the crowns, implants, partials or whatever we are doing for your cosmetic dentistry.  It is important to have exact impressions so that the materials fit properly in your mouth.  This requires the patient to be very still while the impression material is going through it’s hardening process. Some patients find this very uncomfortable and some even gag on the substance.  Since patient comfort is our priority, we decided to invest in this scanner that will eliminate all of that for the most part.

With our new scanner, we simply scan the teeth with a pen like scanner.  The digital images appear on the screen in a three dimensional format.  This gives us the opportunity to pass the information over to the lab as quickly as sending an email. This makes it easy to get the work back from the lab quicker.  Because the scans are 3D and extremely accurate the crowns, partials, the night guards will all fit better.  We are very excited to now be able to offer this to all of our patients who want to have a little cosmetic dentistry done.

Services in dental technology are providing patients with a vast amount of options for cosmetic dentistry. Dentistry has evolved, and patients are looking for esthetics, not mere treatment. Patient’s concerns are not just health related anymore as they are now concerned with how their teeth look. Patients are looking to enhance their smile. They are asking about teeth whitening, veneers, implants and crowns.

We offer veneers, implants, crowns and teeth whitening that will improve your appearance and your overall well being keeping you looking young and attractive.

Dental Veneers

Cosmetic dentistry services also uses the technique known as veneers. Veneers are thin strips of material that are applied over different flaws of the tooth. Veneers are a professional dental treatment that applies material that is usually made from porcelain. We as dental professionals match the color of the porcelain to match other teeth. If the veneers are not a good match, they will stick out as different and affect the quality of the patient’s smile. Veneers are also very useful in covering up those stubborn stains that never seem to be removed with routine cleanings.

Veneers are often mistaken for bonding, but they are very different. In bonding we use a soft plastic resin that is then shaped to the tooth. The veneer process is thin strips made from ceramic-based material, porcelain. The other difference is in the life of the treatment. Bonding will last a few years while the veneer porcelain can have a life span of a decade or more. Porcelain is much stronger than the resin used for bonding. The color of the porcelain can come much closer to the natural color of the teeth providing a more natural smile.

With dental veneers, you can cover misshapen or colored teeth with this extremely thin porcelain. These translucent shells of ceramic look just like your own teeth, only better.

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the discoloration of teeth that include certain food and drinks, smoking and aging. With veneers, that can all be covered up. They can also cover up chips and gaps.

With wear and tear, teeth can often get shorter. The hand sculptured porcelain veneers can restore the length of your teeth as well.  They will also add volume to your smile, plumping out lines around the mouth. Since they are constructed in such a way it allows for the fine detail of natural tooth’s enamel be visible. Veneers can be completed in just a few visits. They restore the brightness and youthfulness of your smile.

Dental Implants

With implants, you can get replacements for teeth that are rotten, black, or unhealthy, while having rock-hard strength, due to the fact that implants are placed right into your jaw bone, just like the roots of your real teeth. Implants can also be placed in areas where there are missing teeth. They are an excellent choice for filling in the gaps in your smile.

People are often unaware of the dangers of losing teeth and how that effects their jaws and bones. When teeth are lost, the bone starts to shrink. So when losing a tooth, it is a good idea to consider an implant as soon as possible or you may need to include a bone graph.

Implant services are a permanent solution to tooth loss. Implants make use of  titanium anchors that are placed in the jaw bone and act as the root of the tooth. They are permanently set and will not shift. then a crown is placed on top and attached with abutments. Dental implants look and feel like real teeth. Dental implants are truly life changing for someone who has missing teeth. and are a much better solution to the problem than partials. They are permanent  and stop the bone from shrinking. Partials and dentures do nothing to prevent bone loss. Dental implants can be used to replace all of your teeth, a few or just one without the disadvantages associated with dentures.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are a tooth shaped shell that is placed over an existing tooth. This is done to restore a tooth’s shape, size, strength and to enhance it’s appearance.  Crowns are cemented into place and they completely encase the entire tooth that exists above the gum line.  Crowns are a good choice when you have a weak tooth, a tooth that has been exposed to decay or has been cracked or worn down. Crowns are also used to hold dental bridges in place.  When a patient does not like the look of their teeth such as too short, crooked teeth, ragged or chipped teeth, crowns are an excellent treatment.  Our crowns are made with the superior strength of Zirconia.

Teeth Whitening

Minimal invasion is also a concern when asking about improving the esthetics of one’s smile. So what patients want to know is what services can give them a great smile with the least amount of work.

The Zoom teeth whitening system is used in our office because it uses a compound that is easy on sensitive teeth.

There are many different kinds of teeth whitening applications but here in our office, we use the Zoom teeth whitening system.  Amongst dental professionals, the Zoom system is widely used because of how effective it is.  It utilizes a hydrogen-peroxide gel combined with an activator.  The activator is a sophisticated halide light that accelerates the effectiveness of the whitening gel. Mixing these two together is what separates the Zoom system from other tray type applications. In addition, the Zoom power lite has two times more effectiveness than similar devices. Both upper and lower teeth can be whitened at the same time.

This process takes about 90 minutes from start to finish. We break it up into a three part series and apply the gel three different times. Once we have completed the process we then use a neutral sodium fluoride gel which helps with tooth sensitivity.

We then will send you home with a tray whitening product that you can use at home for a refresher in between visits.  They system is safe and very effective. We preform this treatment with calibrated accuracy.  The results are quite amazing.  With our Zoom system you can get rid of years of stains and really feel good about your smile.  Everybody is different but we have seen as many as three to five shades whiter. It works best for those who have healthy gums and healthy un-restored teeth. Subsequently, if you have a normally healthy mouth, you can be sure that such a treatment will have quality results.

In our dental office, you will receive an experienced and professional diagnosis as to what procedures and services will be right for you. We understand how your smile can affect your self-confidence and we will provide you with the best recommendations for your budget and lifestyle.

We recently performed a case study that starts with the Zoom Whitening System and follows  the patient through a complete transformation of his smile and the services we provided for him.  Click here to view the story.

Periodontal maintenance & therapy

Regular cleanings are preventive of disease. But what happens when the disease is active? We find this out by measuring the cuff of gum around the teeth. We want that cuff to be no more than 3 mm deep. The deeper it gets beyond that the more difficult to clean and the more infection there will be in the gums. This is called a periodontal pocket. We do this measuring of the gum’s depth at the initial visit and usually once a year after that.

At this point we are not preventing but we are treating a disease. This requires the hygienist to go to the depth of the pocket to clean out the infection that resides there. Since it is done gently and thoroughly it will take more time and skill to “clean” the teeth and gums. Instead of one appointment it may take two to four.

Even this does not usually bring the mouth back to complete health. The gums are weak and vulnerable to periodontal disease. If you have this problem you may need to be seen three to four times a year instead of twice to deep the disease under control.

There are situations where the disease is severe enough that we will refer you to a specialist is gum disease (periodontist) for more complicated treatment.

Fluoride treatment

If you, or a family member, are at a moderate-to high risk of developing caries, a professional fluoride treatment can help. The fluoride preparation used in our dental office is a much stronger concentration than that in toothpastes or fluoride mouth rinses that may be available in a store or at a pharmacy. Our professional fluoride treatment generally takes just a few minutes and is offered in the form of a varnish. Your teeth will absorb the fluoride and help repair microscopic carious areas. Depending on your oral health status, fluoride treatments may be recommended every six months or more frequently as an additional preventive measure if you are at a moderate or high risk of developing caries.

Oral Cancer Screening

In addition to traditional oral cancer screening, our office offers Velscope technology to thoroughly care for our patient’s oral health. The VELscope®Vx handheld device emits a harmless, bright blue light which is used to inspect the mouth and tongue. The device is sensitive to abnormal tissue changes and the distinctive blue-spectrum light causes the soft tissue (oral mucosa) of the mouth to naturally fluoresce. Healthy tissues fluoresce in distinct patterns that may be visibly disrupted when tissue undergoes an abnormal change (which can occur in the oral mucosa for a multitude of reasons,) such as when associated with dysplasia or oral cancer.

The caries process if a multifactorial and can culminate in localized region of hard dental tissue, filled with bacteria producing weak acids from carbohydrate fermentation. Also, microbiological shifts within the oral biofilm can upset the balance of tooth enamel mineralization process, which can be affected by salivary flow and composition, fluoride exposure, consumption of dietary sugars, and hygiene habits.

Anatomical grooves, or pits and fissures on occlusal surfaces of permanent molars can trap food particles and promote presence of bacterial biofilm, increasing the risk of developing caries lesions. Effectively penetrating and sealing these surfaces with a dental material is part of a comprehensive caries management approach as sealants can inhibit or arrest the progression of caries in grooves.

Mouth Guards for Clenching, Grinding, or TMJ Problems

People who grind or clench their teeth may wake with a headache, earache or toothache. Their facial muscles may be sore and the jaw joints tender. Besides causing discomfort, grinding can eventually damage dental restorations and may loosen teeth. Bruxism also can cause damage to the temporomandibular joints—the joints on each side of the mouth that connect the lower jaw to the skull. The pressure from clenching and grinding can cause cracks or fractures in the teeth. As the tooth enamel is worn away, the underlying layer of dentin may be exposed. This causes the tooth to become sensitive to temperature changes and pressure.

Although the causes of bruxism are not really known, several factors may be involved. Stress, problems in sleeping, an abnormal bite, and crooked or missing teeth may contribute. A night guard is a custom-made soft material to fit your teeth, it slips over the teeth in one jaw and prevents direct contact with opposing teeth. The nightguard relieves some of the pressure of grinding and clenching.
